Superyacht Installations See Growing Interest in Green Solutions

Marine Exhaust Solutions Inc. (MES), pioneers in exhaust gas cleaning systems, have just completed the manufacture, installation and commissioning on the first of four EcoSilencer® systems on an innovative ICON luxury yacht.
The first EcoSilencer-equipped yacht was driven by ICON CEO and visionary yacht builder, Wim Koersvelt. The state-of-the-art vessel, which has now been fully sea trialed, will be premiered at the prestigious Monaco Yacht Show, September 23rd to 26th. Highlighted along with the vessels many advanced build technologies and onboard sophistications will be the vessel’s exceptional environmental performance, set by the EcoSilencer system.
ICON Yachts selected the MES EcoSilencer design to set a new standard for cleaner, quieter exhaust emissions. The resulting collaboration was the design of a fully integrated EcoSilencer J-3 exhaust gas cleaning system for the vessels’ three auxiliary engines. The EcoSilencer removes 90% of visible soot and virtually all of the oil from the exhaust, and provides significant noise attenuation on deck. Through a patented process the EcoSilencer system further cleans the wash water onboard by having unburned hydro carbons and lube oils siphoned off using a hydro-cyclone system. Previously, the emission of hydrocarbons and soot contributed to ocean pollution, deck marring, and hull discolouration, with the EcoSilencer these emissions are sent to the vessel's waste oil tank for later disposal ashore. The result is cleaner oceans, cleaner decks, lower maintenance costs, and the establishment of ICON Yachts as the most environmentally friendly vessels afloat.
Klaas de Vries, ICON’s Manager Technical Department, said “We wanted a system that would meet our strict emission criteria for the life of the vessel; the EcoSilencer design has shown it will achieve that.”
With the EcoSilencer, ICON Yachts will be welcomed in the most environmentally sensitive waterways of the world. As the market for ultra clean yachts grows, builders such as ICON Yachts, who are dedicated to maximizing yachting enjoyment for owners, will continue to see the potential in building yachts that are green and clean.
Peter Toombs, MES President, stated, “Demand for the J-Series market continues to grow as yacht builders, like ICON and their clients, want to take responsibility for their own environmental practices".
