Marine Exhaust Solutions: MES EcoSilencer FAQs

1. How do you envision the pay-back at different types of fuel, 1,5% S through to 4.5% S ?

3. Have you included the installation costs in you payback calculations, and if so how can you be sure the rates are realistic?
4. Does the level of sulphur in the fuel effect the system performance?
5. How long is the expected life of the system and what warranties are offered?

1. How do you envision the pay-back at different types of fuel, 1.5% S through to 4.5% S ?
The price differential between fuel grades is very questionable right now, however we have based our calculations on the EC figure that suggests a premium of US 50$ per ton for low sulphur fuel. The payback of the system is a function of the amount of fuel burnt. For a typical vessel in the 20,000 kW power range we expect the payback to be under 4 years.

2. Not considering potential spreads in fuel costs because of price difference between sulphur contents, how do you see the pay-back potential based Sulphur Credit Trading schemes?
The payback benefits of Emission Trading Schemes have been very successful in other jurisdictions. We expect the same success in the designated SECA’s but have not included this form of payback in our calculations.

3. Have you included the installation costs in you payback calculations, and if so how can you be sure the rates are realistic?
Our payback calculation includes the installation. It is true MES has no control over the actual ship yard installation costs however experience has shown that the installed cost at a European yard can be estimated as 100% of the manufacturing cost for a refit. A new build would be somewhat less in cost.
4. Does the level of sulphur in the fuel effect the system performance?
No, the EcoSilencer® will remove up to 90% of the SO2 from the exhaust gas, regardless of the original sulphur content of the bunker fuel. Actual results depend on the engine configuration and system design. A minimum of 70% SO2 removal is guaranteed with a target of 85% removal.

5. How long is the expected life of the system and what warranties are offered?
The design life of the MES manufactured EcoSilencers® is 20 years with a 1 year warranty against defects. The third party items (pumps, filters, piping) come with the manufactures supplied warranty.

6. What spare part inventory is required and what is the maintenance program for the system?
The EcoSilencers® themselves have no moving parts or filters that require cleaning, maintenance is limited to annual inspections. The water circulation and filtration system comes with a manufactures suggested spares kit and annual scheduled maintenance plan normally supplied with Maintenance Manual. See Operation FAQs for details.
